Rafters at Culture Room, Brooklyn, NY (November 6 - 22, 2014).
The title of this show refers to two things: beams supporting a roof and passengers traveling by raft. One invokes a place of protection and security, the other a means of flotation and survival. The strain between safety and exposure lies at the heart of Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. This story follows a misbegotten journey shaped at turns by affection and cruelty, generosity and deceit. Illustrations from an early edition of this book provide the source material for the work on display at Culture Room. This work seeks a sphere of connection and overlap between the varied meanings of rafters.
